Volunteer Opportunities at Applemead Co-op
Volunteer Committees
Applemead Co-op has a number of volunteer committees. They are important to the effective and enthusiastic running of the co-op. Each committee has their own agenda and meeting schedules for accomplishing goals.
General Member's Meetings are typically held on the second Thursday of the month twice a year.
Social Committee
Social organizes social gatherings in the co-op. They plan events around special occasions such as Halloween and Christmas parties for the kids. They also organize events throughout the year such as movie nights. They also organize our co-op's anniversary event which includes a BBQ, games and bouncers for the kids, activities such as horseshoes for the adults and a street dance.
Community Resources
Community Resources aims to help bring valuable, needed resources to Applemead members. We've partnered with other organizations to provide resources (Food for Life) and activities such as summer camps and recreational activities for Applemead children. Community Resources members also attend community-based events and volunteer for a number of local initiatives.
Garden/Landscape Committee
Landscape volunteers assists in the upkeep of the co-op's gardens. They accomplish this in a variety of ways ie. planting and maintaining flower gardens, organizing clean up days etc.
Member Education/ Selection Committee
Member Ed & Selection holds information sessions and interviews for prospective members and recommends new members to the Board of Directors.
Upon move-in Member Ed & Selection members welcome new members to the community.
Each member needs to be knowledgeable on how the co-op functions and its objectives. Member Education helps support the ongoing education process by hosting workshops and selecting and distributing educational material in a variety of formats.
Ad Hoc Committees
Ad Hoc Committees are formed for short periods of time for specific issues. Once the issue is resolved the committee is dissolved. An example is furnaces - a committee was formed to research and obtain bids from various companies on the purchase and installation of new furnaces. The recommendations were made to the General Members at a meeting. Members voted and once the furnaces were installed the committee was dissolved.
How Much Volunteer Time Is Required?
We understand each member of Applemead is an individual and in some cases may find it difficult to volunteer on a consistent basis with any one committee. We try to make the volunteer system as flexible as possible for everyone.
Volunteering within the Co-op is part of each member's commitment to Applemead and is mandatory.
However, if you are not able to regularly volunteer on a committee, there are other ways to stay involved.
The following partial list may help:
To volunteer, simply send an email to advise the office of what you'd like to volunteer to do.
